Sometimes A Grid Can Save You

2 months ago / 3 Comments

The idea by some web designers that a grid isn't necessary goes to show how silly some people in our industry can be. Sure sometimes you can simply get by with a design by "eyeing" it, but a grid helps to keep the chaos under control with a bit of structure. Even the best effects and elements won't carry a design if the grid isn't there to prop it up.

A great example of this is Improve Photos. I only mention this site because it was submitted to the Gallery so I assume it's okay for a little public talking. I wanted to like this site. I enjoy the typography and the dropshadow effects that it incorporates. The background gives the site a serene feeling. However, there is just one problem and it's a big one.

Everything on the page seems to be randomly positioned on the page.

I can't find any sense of alignment or structure on the page and therefore to my eye it falls apart. It's a shame because this design isn't that far from being really good. While you can make a design look as though it is in chaos within a grid, there is still some structure and alignment in that chaos that subconsciously pleases the eye. Improve photos doesn't have that, but it could easily attain that.

Again this isn't a teardown of the site, but just me nitpicking on an aspect of design that many amateur web designers seem to miss.

I am sorry to hear that! I am especially sorry because I busted my head by struggling to figure out this design. I guess I went too far with trying to be original and push the boundaries, aspiring to convey a more unconventional style.

seems "to be randomly positioned", because everything was planned exactly... Anyway, I don't see it now, I got used to the site as is and it has grown on me.

I would like more details, about your opinion and chat about it. If you want, drop me an e-mail.

I appreciate your professional review!

Hey Alex,

Thanks for providing me with some input as to your thought process. If I can free up enough time this weekend I will gladly shoot you an email about how I feel the design could be tightened up.
