As a person who loves a good book, I'm always on the hunt for a new read. So, have you read anything good lately?
Personally, "How to be a Graphic Design Without Losing Your Soul" by Adrian Shaughnessy is my latest find, and its been pretty insightful. He seems to have a knack for explaining the difficult aspects of design, but with relative ease to the reader; very encouraging.
Designing the Obvious by Robert Hoekman, Jr. is a great read for any interface designer. It covers only the basics but is a great refresher and gives you a nice set of guidelines to use everyday
All this thread did was remind me that I haven't read a book in months and now feel like a lazy bum. Thanks Damon.
Great thread - thanks for starting it. Hopefully it won't drop off the face of the earth so I can get some regular suggestions.
The best couple of design books I've read recently are:
1. The Elements of Typographic Style - Robert Bringhurst. I can't stress how good this book is, and I'd highly recommend it if you want to know more about typography. There's little direct talk about digital and web fonts, but the principles are quite transferable and universal.
2. Making and Breaking the Grid - Timothy Samara. A book focusing on the history and progression of design, how it moved into being quite a precise art. Lots of examples first of designs adhering quite strictly to different types of grid, and secondly designs based on grids but with the design breaking out for great effect.
Steve Krug's latest, Rocker Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems, came out in December and was wondering if anyone has gotten the chance to look at it? If it is half as good as his first one then it should be a gem.
On another note, feel free to stick some Fiction books in here, all my reading can't be about design and web work.
I've not had a chance to look at Krug's latest.. that should probably go on the list.
I'm a big fan of Lions, and I just started "A Lion Called Christian". It's about two guys that adopt a lion and raise him, and eventually return him to the wild. Just started it, so we'll see.
I'll pick up Krug's book in Feb and will be sure to let everyone know my thoughts on it here. I'm not really one for non-fiction as I seem to get enough of that daily. I like to drift away to fantasy lands and pretend that I am just another man with purple feet and crab claws as hands.
I just finished Mitch Albom's latest, "Have A Little Faith".
Really, really good non-fiction by one of my favorite authors.
I'm planning on buying "Have A Little Faith". I loved his other books, "The Five People you Meet in Heaven" and "Tuesdays with Morrie".
Currently I just started reading "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" by Harold S. Kushner. After a long time of reading fiction I felt the need for some insight books again. Next one is "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Peale.
I also liked PopCo by Scarlett Thomas, it's from the point of view of a woman. I liked the story, about a large multinational toy company. The company has a lot of characteristics of companies like Google and Yahoo, etc.
My last fiction book that I read was The Terror by Dan Simmons. I'm currently reading A Project Guide to UX Design.
I read that Twilight story by Stephanie Meyer. I know it's a bit cheesy, having been turned into a film and all that, but it's a great story.
Just started "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. He's very...different... to read.
The Art of Client Service by Robert Solomon is becoming a must read for me.
for those of you who can get it, Jeremy Clarkson's The World According to Clarkson is a laughfest.
